In 2009, Aalborg Industries introduced the new business area “Water Treatment Systems” specialising in ballast water treatment.

In a joint venture agreement with the German Aquaworx, Aalborg Industries has initiated the development and global marketing of systems for ballast water treatment. Aquaworx has a well-functioning and patented technology which until now has been applied to water treatment in land-based plants. With Aalborg Industries as partner, water treatment systems from Aquaworx will be further developed for maritime applications, and then marketed and produced by the Aalborg Industries Group.

Ballast water treatment is a future requirement to prevent the biological unbalance caused by the estimated 12 billion tons of ballast water transported across the seas by ocean going ships. Thousand of species and microorganisms are transported worldwide as ”stowaways” in the ballast water creating unpredictable problems for the different ecosystems when ballast water tanks are emptied.

Main product and competences
Aalborg Industries introduces the AquaTriComb™ water treatment system which is designed to clean ballast water without the use of chemicals. No generation of chemical substances takes place and energy requirements are relatively low.

The AquaTriComb™ features outstanding efficiency combined with low operating costs and a small footprint for onboard installation. Ballast water is cleaned without the use of chemicals using ecologically friendly UV light in combination with Ultra Sound for disinfection on a continuous and waste free basis. Thanks to the use of ultrasonic technology the system is self-cleaning and thus almost entirely maintenance-free.

To be in full compliance with the IMO legislation the AquaTriComb™ solution is active during deballasting, the water is again passed through the system for cleaning and filtration. This ensures that bacteria and micro-organisms in the inaccessible ballast tanks and channels of the ship are effectively eliminated and only clean water is returned to the sea.
