Through continuous innovation and development, Aalborg Industries has set the industry standard for Inert Gas Generators and Systems for decades. Aalborg Industries has close to 50 years of experience (since 1962) with Inert Gas Systems for the tanker industry and has supplied more than 3,000 Inert Gas Systems. Designing the appropriate Inert Gas System takes special engineering skills and Aalborg Industries’ expertise centres in the Netherlands and Japan supply innovative, reliable systems.
Inert Gas Systems in the Aalborg Industries Group’s second largest business area accounting for almost a quarter of the total business volume and covering both the Marine and the Oil & Gas business segments.
Inert Gas Systems are required by law (SOLAS) on many oil and gas tanker types and other vessels carrying cargoes that may develop explosive, and Aalborg Industries also supplies inert gas systems to industrial plants. Inert Gas Systems reduce the oxygen content in the cargo tanks by supplying inert gas (~ inactive gas), thus limiting the risk of explosive gas mixtures, mainly during sea transport, unloading and tank cleaning.
What is Inert Gas?
According to the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) definitions, inert gas is a gas or a mixture of gases, such as flue gas, that contain insufficient oxygen to support the combustion of hydrocarbons.
An inert condition is defined as a condition in which the oxygen content throughout the atmosphere of the (cargo) tank has been reduced to 8% or less in volume by addition of inert gas.
Why use inert gas systems?
A fire needs heat, fuel and oxygen to develop. Taking away one of these elements in the fire triangle will stop or prevent a fire. Thus, an oxygen content in a tank below 8% achieved by addition of inert gas is one of the options for preventing the fire. As a measure to achieve tanker safety, the 1978 Protocol to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) include the requirement for Inert Gas Systems on all new tankers over 20,000 dwt.
