The history of Aalborg Industries Inert Gas Systems goes back to the end of the 19th century when Willem Smit founded his company in 1882 manufacturing electric motors, generators, transformers and switch gear (Smit Transformers). In 1913, he opened new facilities in Nijmegen.
Business was later expanded to include Smit Wire, Smit Weld and in 1927 Smit Ovens.

Smit Ovens developed in a world renowned brand,
expanding in size, product range and market applications.

- New industrial applications of Smit Ovens required inert gas. So in 1962, Smit Ovens delivered its first inert gas generator for an industrial application.
- In 1967, Smit Ovens delivered the first marine inert gas system ever to M/V "Willem Barentsz".
- Since 1962, approximately 2,000 inert gas installations have been delivered, the majority for marine applications.
- In 1997, the inert gas operations of Smit Ovens continued as an independent company under the name Smit Gas Systems.
- In 2003, Smit Gas Systems became part of Delft Instruments.
- In 2006, Aalborg Industries acquires 100% of the shares in Smit Gas Systems.
