Two types of FPSOs can be distinguished: conversions and newbuildings. In case of a converted crude oil tanker, the existing flue gas installation may be used or refurbished. If the boiler is decommissioning or removed, a separate Inert Gas Generator is installed. In both conversions and newbuildings; systems supplied are often equipped with dual fuel burners (capable of using natural gas or diesel oil as fuel). Furthermore, most FPSOs are fitted with a double system for redundancy purposes.
The requirements for inert gas generation onboard FPSOs and FSOs can differ tremendously. The system execution may vary from a standard Inert Gas Generator for engine room installation, suitable for outdoors erection (in non- or classified area) up to complete packaged units.
Aalborg Industries has developed several standards for the offshore industry but at the same time is also able to offer custom-built plants according to customer specifications.
